IE8 Beta 2 Problem: New Tab/Window not opening
(too old to reply)

I just installed IE 8 Beta 2 but I don't seem to be able to open web links in
a new tab or window. Selecting new tab from the right-click menu or
middle-clicking causes a new tab to open with the title 'Connecting...', in
the right tab colour, but there is no address in the URL bar and the page
never loads. Open Link in New Window does nothing.

I'm running Windows Server 2008 x64, I've tried in both IE x32 and IE x64,
and even in no addon mode to no avail. If anyone has any idea what's going on
or where I can get more information I'd appreciate it.

I had the same problem plus a ton of others so I just uninstalled it. This
is worse than Beta 1.

I have the same problem, running Vista x86 +SP1.
What's more I noticed that Windows Explorer (not IE) was always opening new
folders in new windows even though I've had specifically set it to open new
folders in the same explorer window.
Both problems were bypassed by turning IE8 quick tabs off.

I have this exact same problem. I tried altering the quick tabs setting as
you suggested but this did not solve the problem. Did you alter any other
settings or take other action in addition to the "Quick Tabs" setting?

Nop I've just changed the quick tabs setting.
You'll have to make sure though that all processes of IE are closed after
changing this and then restart IE.

Hi,
thanks for your reply. I tried as you suggested but still have the same
problem. Maybe there is multiple caused.

I have also tried disabling tabs altogether. Once I did this I then tried
using the "Open in New Window" context menu option. This did not work
either. The window that owned the context menu loses focus, but no new
window appears.

In the task manager an extra iexplore.exe process is created, but no
window...Definetly something fishy going on with the Beta.

I will keep tracking.

I experienced the same bug as well, closing all of the IE process in task

Tabs are correctly created when I use the about:Tabs screen to launch a new
Tab.

But if I got to www.google.com and "Open in New Tab" on the "Advanced
Search" link the problem occurs:
*Brand new Tab is created
*Titled: "Connecting"
*Colored the same as the intial Tab.
*Nothing is ever loaded in this tab
*The processes do not appear to be removed when closing IE (iexplore.exe
remains).
*The "Internet Options" dialog is displayed once this state has been reached.

Correction:
*The "Internet Options" dialog is NOT displayed once this state has been

Thank you, this workaround seems to have been successful. To those who are
still having problems: Have you tried completely restarting Windows after
changing the quick tab setting? That was the only issue I had with this.

Additionally, I noticed that I never had the new tab not opening problem on
my Administator account, which uses the secure protected-mode IE. It might be
worth looking at IE8 on other user accounts on your machines.

I think I fixed it; I’ll try to recreate somewhere else. I closed Internet
Explorer then I run it As Administrator, disabled the quick tab, closed and
then restarted the computer. Maybe it worked all alone with the Administrator
thingy but didn’t test doing that alone. I hope it helps.

Thankyou, running IE8 as administrator just once resolved a few issues for
me, including:

- Corrupted hard drive icon for the Vista partition.
- Windows Explorer opening new windows despite being set to open in the same
window.
- Disfunctional tabs/new windows in IE8 using the right-click menu or
CTRL/SHIFT shortcuts.
- No right-click menu on the tab/favorites bar.
- No functionality when opening items in the Explorer Bars submenu.
- Excessive amount of iexplore.exe processes open and retained in memory
after the program was closed.

Well here it is after release date and the problem is still here. Same things

There are lots of suggestions, all tried, non worked.

I'm running Windows Server 2008 x64, I've tried in both IE x32 and IE x64,
and even in no addon mode to no avail. If anyone has any idea what's going on
or where I can get more information I'd appreciate it.
I have the same problem, running Vista x32 +SP1, Comodo 3 firewall and AVG 8
anti-virus.

I'm having the same problems

- Explorer always opens new windows
- IE8 Tabs just show "Connecting..."

I've tried all the suggested remedies, but nothing works. This software
doesn't seem ready for alpha testing, much less beta.

I had the same problem, the following procedure resolved all issues for me...

* open a new "Command Prompt" window by right-clicking and selecting "Run
as administrator";
* at the prompt, run the command "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll".

Apparently this particular DLL does not get registered correctly for some
users. I have no idea why. Microsoft probably needs to research the various
software conflicts with the install, and correct this.
