Discussion:
IE 8 w/deprecated HTML Marquee and IE 8 Standards mode

Does IE 8 no render or plan to utilize the deprecated HTML Marquee tag. Even
though it is deprecated I have found it to be a very efficient marquee
control versus many of the free JavaScript versions.

For example, when I open up one of my sites, all Marquess were static and
unmoving. But when I toggled over to IE 7 mode the Marquees worked.

If IE 8 will not support HTML Marquees I will have to futher, better
JavaScript implementations.

Also, all other browsers I've tried (IE 6 and 7, Firefox 2.x and 3.x, Safari
3.1.x, and Opera 9.x) render my HTML markup very similary. IE 8 on the other
hand, does not render it as intended. Is the Standards mode for IE
unfinished (to a great extent) or are they using some unknown albeit stricter
version of Standards mode I am unaware of. BTM I use the "-//W3C//DTD XHTML
1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd" doctype.

Thanks for you replies.

Joe, thanks for pointing that out. I'll see if I can determine what problem
IE 8 has with my Marquee's.
I went to this site, http://www.fdnygonesouth.com and their scrolling text
works for me.

A workaround is to place the marquee on a page with no DOCTYPE, then call it
where you want by placing that page in an iframe.

MARQUEE should be implemented because we've now the
CSS3-MARQUEE as Last Call, so it will be implemented in
a few time in each browser. When it will be, MARQUEE can be
emulated by CSS. There's thus no reason to delete MARQUEE
of the HTML Rendering engine.

IE would better try to add this to the HTML 5 specification with
the approval of the W3C CSS3 WG.

Fremy

Please note that the IE Team probably have deleted the old MARQUEE
to implements it in a more standard way (using CSS3-MARQUEE module).
So it's possible that the MARQUEE will be availlable in the BETA 2.
