Oh, you expect any software manufacturer to make a new release of their
software promise support on their unsupported products. Uh huh. If a
product is unsupported then, gee, it's unsupported by all future products,
too. If they promise support for a newly released product on their old
product, well, then that old product is still supported.

I agree, but I will point out that Microsoft just released a new feature for
image display and manipulation--WIC--which runs on XP and Server 2003 only.
So, new stuff for XP is still being rolled out--but in the time frame of IE9
this does seem unlikely.

Windows Server 2003 mainstream support dies in July 2010 so that product's
lifecycle hasn't expired yet (and moved into extended support until 2015).
They may have made WIC so it runs on Windows Server 2003 and coincidentally
included XP perhaps because Windows XP 64-bit is based on Windows Server
2003 code.

Assuming IE9 doesn't take 6 years to show up, by the time it is released
there will already be the current Windows 7 version and the one back version
of Windows Vista. It may be coincidental that IE9 will run on Windows XP
but I doubt Microsoft will officially support that 3-version old OS;
however, with the protected mode for IE that became available only with
Vista, Microsoft may decide to kill off the more insecure versions of IE,
and likewise IE9 may require security features only available since Vista
(and may even have Windows 7 as its minimal platform).

I think the security improvements in the platform may well, aside from the
lifecycle stuff, dictate whether a new browser version runs on the older
versions. I wouldn't expect much new from Microsoft that will be compatible
with XP, unless it has minimal security and networking characteristics.

Oh--and the WIC thing that looked new and interesting--when I got to
installing it (version 1.0 with a release date in the last 3 days)--it said
a newer version was already installed....

WHAT!? XP is still supported last I checked! Where are you getting your
information VanguardLH!? IE9 needs to be released for XP, in fact, it should
still technically be released for 2K (as far as I know it's still being
supported as well although I'm not totally sure of that as I haven't used it
for quite some time now), but XP is still being updated, and still has a huge
user base because it's far superior to Vista and many people are even wary of
7 because of Vista being such a failure. So I'm really not sure why you
would make such an uninformed comment!

Where are you getting your information? Did you even look? For IE v9, how
do YOU /*know*/ (not guess) that anything before Windows Vista will be
supported?

When I tried to install the currently available Platform Preview version of
IE9, the install abort by telling me that Windows Vista SP-2 was the minimum
version on which I could install.

For the Internet Explorer 9 Test Drive, go look at:
http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Default.html

Read the FAQ which says:

Q. Does Platform Preview run on Windows XP?
A. No. Internet Explorer 9’s GPU-powered graphics take advantage of new
technologies available in Windows 7 and back-ported only to Windows Vista.
These technologies depend on advancements in the display driver model
introduced first in Windows Vista.

Q. Will the final release of Internet Explorer 9 install side by side with
earlier versions of Internet Explorer 8? Will Internet Explorer 9 run on
Windows XP?
A. It’s too early to talk about features of the Internet Explorer 9 Beta.
Our focus with Internet Explorer Platform Preview is to provide a vehicle
with which Web developers can test their sites today and start planning if
and how they want to support new HTML5 capabilities in the future. It is not
intended for daily browsing.

Microsoft may decide not to have IE9 support pre-Vista versions of Windows
as a means of prodding users to upgrade to Windows Vista or 7 (i.e., if you
want IE9, pay for a newer Windows version). We'll have to see what happens
but the omens are already there.

I agree, IE 9 or programs like this that can run with different OS should be
constructed to work with
whatever platforms are in use. There are still many big companies that are
still using XP since Vista
was such a dog. Not many have changed to Windows 7 at this time. Probably
waiting to get the
kinks out first. I'm an XP user and think that all new programs should
automatically have the Compatibility
with older programs built in to them. Where does one go to vote for this ?

If IE9 isn't going to work with XP what other Browsers / E-mail programs do
you recommend.
Is there any site that rates them as to how they work or don't work?
Thanks !
