Post by Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WMPost by vikybossAlways the zoom level reverts back to 125%, on opening ie8.
----------------
This post is a suggestion for Microsoft,
Set your DPI back to 96 to fix this. Don't ask how without revealing your
Windows version.
That is unacceptable to all of us who have Accessibility needs. I must have
the DPI at 120. The only way I can use beta 2 is to set compatibility View
for ALL websites. Beta 1, of course, didn't have this problem so this came
out of nowwhere for me and smacked me right in the face. I can't even use
my home site www.dslreports.com without setting beta 2 to compatibility
view. I would never have installed beta2 had I known about this issue.
I have used a DPI of 120 since getting my first computer in 1999. I am not
Low Vision ...just have aging eyes and am very nearsighted so particularly
with high resolution LCD monitors, 120 DPI is essential, plus, being able to
set a large minimum font size in a browser is also essential. I don't
understand why Microsoft doesn't simply give us the right to set a minimum
default font size instead of messing with zoom and HIDPI. Zoom is worthless
to me because it does not enlarge text in a reply box on a forum unless I go
to something ridiculous like 300% zoom which makes the rest of the page
gigantic and sprawl off the sides. Firefox and Opera allow me to set a
default minimum text size and those browsers enlarge ALL text on a site to
that minimum size and they manage to do it within the confines of the
monitor size..no sprawling...no horizontal scrollbars created. Yes, setting
a mimimum text size can cause problems on some websites (text on top of
text) but usually minor problems and if big problems I let the webmaster
know and if they say they don't care if those who don't have perfect
eyesight can't use their site then I don't go to that site again. I think
Microsoft doesn't even understand the accessiblity problems facing IE that
Fx and Opera do not have. Safari for Windows doesn't have the problem either
because with its superior font rendering engine for LCD monitors, I can
actually use a small font and read it easily. I know many other users who
need larger fonts who have observed the same thing about Safari.
(Unfortunately, Safari is a nightmare security wise so I don't use it).
Hannedog's posts are right on target in that thread. Microsoft needs to
jettison Zoom and 125% as default with HIDPI as it is in beta2. Images are
all messed up with it. But Microsoft should not go back to IE7 behavior
either. Microsoft does not listen to its users who need to have IE allow a
minimum font size to be set. Microsoft needs to look at what Mozilla and
Opera have done in this area. Or better yet, Microsoft should ask Apple how
to fix their font rendering engine so that text actually displays very black
and crisp in IE on LCD's as text does in Safari for Windows and then folks
could probably use a standard DPI. Microsoft also needs to allow users to
choose a font like Verdana (which is the easiest to read for aging eyes) for
Plain Text which is used in forum reply boxes. Even the new Plain Text fonts
in beta 2 are poor choices for those of us with less than perfect vision.
Verdana is not there as a choice. Verdana is a choice on other browsers so
why not IE?. Why doesn't Microsoft drop Plain text entirely for forum reply
boxes? With LCD's getting larger and larger this problem is going to get
worse.
