Discussion:
Bring the IE icon back to the desktop

I think that the IE icon should be back on the Windows desktop or at least
there should be a tick box so users can EASILY chose to show it or not to
show it. It is so much more convienent to have an IE icon on the desktop.

I know you can add your own registry key if you want it there but you
shouldn't have to. Doesn't suite novice users.

What are people's thoughts on this?

I think IE6 was the last time IE was on the desktop by default and there were
options in the display settings to show it. So that would be with Windows XP
and 2000.

Ok in Windows Vista, right click the desktop, click Personalize then click
Change desktop icons. You will see the options of viewing: Computer, Recycle
Bin, User's Files, Control Panel and Network desktop icons. I think there
should be an option there to view the IE icon like there used to be!

At least give the users the option of having the IE desktop icon.

Couldn't you just drag the icon to the desktop like every other application?
No need to change a registry key, and I would think IE8 behaving differently
than other applications in that regard would make it harder for novices to
understand

Er, you are all forgetting why this is the case. The US Dept of Justice and
the EU have had big issues with Microsoft's anti-competitive practices,
especially with the case of integrating IE with Windows in Win98, and so
destroying Netscape's business. That is why the IE icon is no longer on the
Desktop by default, and why the Search button disappeared in Vista SP1
(Google was not happy with that - Google Desktop Search). IE7/IE8 is not
integrated with Explorer in the way that IE was previously.

And just removing the icon from the desktop was enough for the EU and DOJ?

What really SHOULD happen is IE not be integrated at all in future versions
of Windows (because honestly it made it more vulnerable), instead making it a
seperate download like Microsoft is doing with other products for Windows 7.
The first run of the Network manager have big links to have the user choose
IE, Firefox, Safai, etc as their default browser and install it.
Of course all this won't happen and is entirely off subject...So back to the
subject at hand.

After IE8 final is released and the user downloads and installs it, could
part of the installation be to (by default) put a link to the program on the
desktop like so many other applications do? I mean one of the normal shortcut
links, with the arrow, not the other kind that IE 6, Recycle Bin, etc are.

Merk, there is a big difference in the "Shortcut to" and the type of Icon
that IE was. Frankly I wish more icons could be hard linked into the
"options" of a program rather than just "shortcuts".

The issue at hand, is that microsoft did this action as supposed compliance,
when in fact, having the icon displayed as a *user* choice would have enabled
MS to be compliant with the rulings. Microsoft's removal of the icon was not
required as corrective action, nor was it required that the icon no longer be
linked so that right clicking it would give you the chance to change IE
options (like doing Tools-> Options inside of IE when running). MS removed
the icon claiming its the only way to make IE un-install-able, a lie, and
thus those that don't mind having the program installed are negatively
impacted making complaints like this thread possible ... in the future
microsoft would look to use these types of complaints as proof to any
governing body that "microsoft knows best" in that people really didn't want
the actions the EU required. .... All microsoft propeganda and BS. Just
another way microsoft screws the user.

Where is the Internet Explorer desktop icon in Windows Vista?:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/108/1/Where-is-the-Internet-Explorer-desktop-icon-in-Windows-Vista.html

Fact: By default, Vista computers do NOT have an IE icon on the desktop
unless Classic View is enabled.

Fact: On computers running WinXP and IE7 or IE8, the IE icon on the desktop
is removed after installing any Cumulative Security Update for IE that was
released since Sept-07.

Don't quite understans what the fuss is about, easy enough to create a
shortcut, which has the same functionality.

The default IE icon on desktop was removed for security reasons by a
cumulative security update for IE released in 2007 (MS07-061). Until the
recent revision, KB945402 presented this information.

KB945402's original title was "The Internet Explorer check box disappears
from the Desktop Items dialog box after you install the QFE version of
security update MS07-061 on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer" when
it was first released in Jan-08.
