Q: Was IE active during any of the above?
A: I used both erasers, command prompt, and registry editing while IE was
active *and* inactive. Tools > Internet Options > Delete (Browsing History)
had IE active and inactive (Run > inetcpl.cpl)
** I should point out that I uninstalled and reinstalled IE8 Beta 2. After
visiting some sites for about 10 minutes, once I tried to delete my browser
history, a window popped up that showed a progress bar and "Please wait while
the browsing history is deleted". This was not happening during the previous
installment. However, after it doing that once, it would not do it again and
my history is back to not being deleted.**
Q: Are you turning off AutoComplete for web addresses before clearing
History? I think that may clear both TypedURLs lists even if IE is still
active.
A: No, I am not, but I did try it and the browser history deletion progress
window actually appeared. Am I to assume I must keep AutoComplete off to
delete browsing history? Unfortunately, when turning AutoComplete back on,
the history comes back again.
** What I meant by 'respawning' is that when I manually X out an item from
history, sometimes the history entry/ies come(s) back when using the drop
down address bar, even after the browser is restarted.**
Keep in mind that none of these entries are in my favorites, and my
'preserve web data' option is not turned on (even if it were on, it still
wouldn't matter as it does the same thing).
I expect that when I opt to delete my browsing history manually, or have it
delete when I exit the browser, that it actually does delete my browsing
history, and well... it doesn't. That and what I've explained is pretty much
all I can say, and there doesn't seem to be a fix for it. It is a beta
version, so I know things are bound to not work properly, but it seems like
this is one of the big things Microsoft is excited about, yet it doesn't seem
to work. Will this most likely not be fixed until the final version or would
they offer a patch? How do I inform the developers of what is happening?
Oh yeah, I am on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on an HP Pavilion
dv2000t notebook, 2 Gigs RAM, with 29gigs of storage free out of 105 gigs.

Was IE active during any of the above?
Post by WilsonNothing. The only way to do this right now for me (and my girlfriend on a
seperate computer) is to manually delete the history from the address bar by
clicking the red x's. And that's a whooole lotta clicking.
If you had IE active when you were deleting TypedURLs
in the registry, IE would still have its internal copy of that key's
values waiting to be written back there.
Also, are you turning off AutoComplete for web addresses
before clearing History? I think that may clear both TypedURLs
lists even if IE is still active. I rarely experiment with the feature
but I think I can remember that there was a case in IE7 which
(surprisingly) cleared everything.
Post by WilsonAfter deleting *all* entries... I do get one that won't go away. It's from
a pop-up that I got (that wasn't blocked for some reason). It's titled "<This
page has not set a title>".
You could use ProcMon to try to figure out where it
is coming from.
Post by WilsonAlso, IE8b2 has a habit of history entries
respawning even after manual deletion.
Doing what? Opening IE? Of course, because
it creates new index.dat for your History
and pre-populates it with various things such
as subscribed Favorites. (At least it used to do
the latter. Again, ProcMon would give you some
clearer ideas of what files were being accessed
and written to when IE is restarted for the first time
after the History folder has been deleted.
