IE 8 history doesn't get deleted properly

I've noticed browse history isn't being deleted properly. I'm using IE8 Beta
2. I've tried two approaches.

1. Go to tools, internet options; click the delete button in browsing history.

I've checked every box except preserve favorite website data.

2. Click on Safety, delete browsing history and check all of the boxes
except preserve favorite website data.

If I click the down arrow on the address bar I can still see my history.
There is an entry under autocomplete suggestion and history has several sites
that I visited yesterday as well. Is this a bug or is there another way to
totally clear the history?

I also have noticed this. I have clicked all the Microsoft methods to delete,
and it still shows up if I start typing part of the site name, and also using
the drop down arrow.

I am also interested to find out why deletion does not delete.
PS Also using CCleaner does not delete this information.

I have also experienced this issue and tried to resolve it the same way as
"Jim" in the first post to no avail. Since I can not tell what would be
deleted if this was working properly, does the delete history (or is it
supossed to) remove the history trail of sites visited that are already in my
favorites folder?

Because of this and one other issue, I uninstalled it is corrected.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I don't have an answer for you, but it is
important that we know what OS version you are using and any other software
that you are using that may be monitoring your surfing history.

Hi,

I reviewed your first post.

I think it has something to do with "Preserve your Favorite Data". Check the
History Items that have not been deleted. Are they in your Favorites
folders?

This would seem logical, as Favorites (Internet Shortcuts) also have entries
in them for the timestamp that you last visited the site and the number of
visits.
Unchecking the option to "Preserve your Favorite Data" should delete those
History Items that are also found in your Favorites folders and reset the
values for the last visit timestamp and number of visits in the Internet
Shortcuts in the Favorites Folder.

Regards.

I am also having the same problem. I have NO One Care or Family care or other
products protecting my browser. I also use CCleaner as well as TuneUp
Utilities 2008 and have re=set everything as previously suggested.

It does NOT occur with INPrivate browing, however, which is a good thing.

I am also Vista 32bit Home Premium SP1.

Other than this issue, I really like IE8...even the new Google Chrome
browser deletes history w/o a problem (but IE8 is SOOOOO much better
overall).

I have this same issue. I have done:

- Tools > Internet Options > Delete (Browsing History) > Every checked box
combination possible
- Right-clicked "Today"s history in Favorites > History tab
- Used command prompt to delete history
- Went into the registry and deleted history
- Used "Free Internet Privacy Eraser"
- Used "CCleaner"
- Restarted computer many times after each delete
- Said "No" to suggested sites
- Prayed
- Gave Bill Gates a foot massage and asked for help

Nothing. The only way to do this right now for me (and my girlfriend on a
seperate computer) is to manually delete the history from the address bar by
clicking the red x's. And that's a whooole lotta clicking.

After deleting *all* entries... I do get one that won't go away. It's from
a pop-up that I got (that wasn't blocked for some reason). It's titled "<This
page has not set a title>". Also, IE8b2 has a habit of history entries
respawning even after manual deletion.

If you had IE active when you were deleting TypedURLs
in the registry, IE would still have its internal copy of that key's
values waiting to be written back there.

Also, are you turning off AutoComplete for web addresses
before clearing History? I think that may clear both TypedURLs
lists even if IE is still active. I rarely experiment with the feature
but I think I can remember that there was a case in IE7 which
(surprisingly) cleared everything.

Doing what? Opening IE? Of course, because
it creates new index.dat for your History

Q: Was IE active during any of the above?
A: I used both erasers, command prompt, and registry editing while IE was
active *and* inactive. Tools > Internet Options > Delete (Browsing History)
had IE active and inactive (Run > inetcpl.cpl)

** I should point out that I uninstalled and reinstalled IE8 Beta 2. After
visiting some sites for about 10 minutes, once I tried to delete my browser
history, a window popped up that showed a progress bar and "Please wait while
the browsing history is deleted". This was not happening during the previous
installment. However, after it doing that once, it would not do it again and
my history is back to not being deleted.**

Q: Are you turning off AutoComplete for web addresses before clearing
History? I think that may clear both TypedURLs lists even if IE is still
active.
A: No, I am not, but I did try it and the browser history deletion progress
window actually appeared. Am I to assume I must keep AutoComplete off to
delete browsing history? Unfortunately, when turning AutoComplete back on,
the history comes back again.

** What I meant by 'respawning' is that when I manually X out an item from
history, sometimes the history entry/ies come(s) back when using the drop
down address bar, even after the browser is restarted.**

Keep in mind that none of these entries are in my favorites, and my
'preserve web data' option is not turned on (even if it were on, it still
wouldn't matter as it does the same thing).

I expect that when I opt to delete my browsing history manually, or have it
delete when I exit the browser, that it actually does delete my browsing
history, and well... it doesn't. That and what I've explained is pretty much
all I can say, and there doesn't seem to be a fix for it. It is a beta
version, so I know things are bound to not work properly, but it seems like
this is one of the big things Microsoft is excited about, yet it doesn't seem
to work. Will this most likely not be fixed until the final version or would
they offer a patch? How do I inform the developers of what is happening?

Oh yeah, I am on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on an HP Pavilion
dv2000t notebook, 2 Gigs RAM, with 29gigs of storage free out of 105 gigs.

Same problem and situation here. Vista Home Premium.

Even with manually deleting from the dropdown address bar using the red x's
the history "grows back" from somewhere. If I open the "history" file its
clear, but tons of info is storing itself somewhere.

And so it goes with the search bar as well. I chose Google. All my search
phrases, mixed with suggestions, for any letter of the alphabet I enter are
there.

I went to Google to check how to delete search history from a toolbar. The
directions say click the arrow to the right, then select "clear search
history". No such selection on offer in ie8.

I'm extremely uncomfortable using this.

history, a window popped up that showed a progress bar and "Please wait while
the browsing history is deleted".

Nothing. The only way to do this right now for me (and my girlfriend on a
seperate computer) is to manually delete the history from the address bar by
clicking the red x's. And that's a whooole lotta clicking.
If you had IE active when you were deleting TypedURLs
in the registry, IE would still have its internal copy of that key's
values waiting to be written back there.
Also, are you turning off AutoComplete for web addresses
before clearing History? I think that may clear both TypedURLs
lists even if IE is still active. I rarely experiment with the feature
but I think I can remember that there was a case in IE7 which
(surprisingly) cleared everything.

After deleting *all* entries... I do get one that won't go away. It's from
a pop-up that I got (that wasn't blocked for some reason). It's titled "<This
page has not set a title>".
You could use ProcMon to try to figure out where it
is coming from.
Post by Wilson
Also, IE8b2 has a habit of history entries
respawning even after manual deletion.
Doing what? Opening IE? Of course, because
it creates new index.dat for your History
and pre-populates it with various things such
as subscribed Favorites. (At least it used to do
the latter. Again, ProcMon would give you some
clearer ideas of what files were being accessed
and written to when IE is restarted for the first time
after the History folder has been deleted.

I was having a similar issue, and realised the history which would not delete
was carried across from IE7. I uninstalled IE8, cleared the history in IE7,

I am also having the same problem. I have NO One Care or Family care or other

No, I don't have anything else monitoring my surfing on my PC. Also the
"Preserve your favorites data" was already unchecked.

Hi,
I reviewed your first post.

I've noticed browse history isn't being deleted properly. I'm using IE8
Beta
2. I've tried two approaches.
1. Go to tools, internet options; click the delete button in browsing
history.
I've checked every box except preserve favorite website data.
2. Click on Safety, delete browsing history and check all of the boxes
except preserve favorite website data.
If I click the down arrow on the address bar I can still see my history.
There is an entry under autocomplete suggestion and history has several
sites
that I visited yesterday as well. Is this a bug or is there another way
to
totally clear the history?

Who knows? Nobody else seems to be doing any diagnosis.
E.g. if you were deleting all sources of History as the others
are claiming, where would your IE7 History hide or come from?

One idea I had is that since Vista has two separate TIF's
is wonder if there are two similarly separate History folders
too but I don't use Vista so I have no way of checking that.

OTOH I think that ProcMon could easily show you which
files are accessed when some false History is shown.
A difficulty with the approach might be that the History
you are seeing could be loaded when IE is initialized,
in which case all entries being shown would be cached
in virtual memory, but that would be found as soon as
someone checked.

Have you noticed that we now suspect some kind of interaction between
the AutoSuggest feature and Windows Search? Have you tried stopping
the wsearch service to see if that changes your symptom?

History entries should be checked in the History pane (e.g. Ctrl-H)
and you can try deleting them there. In previous versions of IE
we were uncertain about how robust that functionality was supposed to be,
in which case I suggested users might have to try providing their own
manual recursion. E.g. whereas it might seem desirable to be able
to delete all entries associated with a particular host site, simply by
using right-click, Delete on a contracted item in History's View by Site;
they might find that a more reliable deletion would be done by using
View by Date, expanding each relevant item there in the order
oldest to newest, and delete each component separately. Otherwise
I can imagine that if certain aspects of recursion are not implemented
users could find that some older instances of files might not be deleted
before the related higher node was deleted, thus leaving an entry for
AutoSuggest to find but no more way to delete it using the History UI.

Go thru the sub keys and look for iehistory and ierss. In both keys there is

Now goto Control Panel and Indexing Options and re-index.

Hello,

I believe that the first approach is correct. But personally I also tried to
reset Internet Explorer settings to the default (from Advanced tab) and now I
don't really now which one made it right. It didn't seem to work first, but I
noticed an icon with a blue question mark near the clock. Clicking it I
understood that it was a security-related community tool that would allow me
to select whether I permit or not for Internet Explorer to apply the changes.
Once I permitted (four actions), and restarted the browser, history was
cleared. I hope it helps.
