The ActiveX Information Bar messages in IE8 are really unhelpful to end users
and IT Admins alike – specifically the ones that display if you’re
restricting ActiveX content to Administrator Approved Controls only i.e.
whitelisting of CLSIDs by GPO.
Two requests:
1) An easy way for enterprise IT administrators to gather stats on which
CLSIDs are being blocked by IE so that they can look into the most requested
(but blocked) controls and decided whether or not to whitelist them –
improving the end user experience without having to wait until the 50th phone
call requesting that users be allowed to use a commonly used ActiveX control.
If compatibility logging is enabled (for use with the ACT) this information
is logged to the registry – that’s a good start, but enabling compatibility
logging on all machines in the production environment isn’t practical, if
only because it displays a warning bubble to the user.
2) A way for enterprise IT admins to customize the message displayed in the
information bar and include a hyperlink – so instead of a user seeing “An
add-on for this website failed to run. Check the security settings in
Internet Options for potential conflicts” (accurate but utterly useless to
end users) they might see “This site isn’t displayed properly as ActiveX
content has been blocked, click here for more details”. The hyperlink could
take them to an intranet site where they’re given the opportunity to request
that the control be introduced to the corporate environment (i.e. packaged,
deployed, whitelisted).
