Discussion:
Unable to access Internet Explorer from one User Account

I recently updated my anti virus protection to Avast 4.8 but since then, I
have been unable to access the internet via Internet Explorer from the first
Windows XP User Account that I open. My wife and I both have Administrator
access on our User Accounts so we can switch to the other account and open
the internet via Internet Explorer from there. It is always the second User
Account that connects successfully. When in the first User Account, trying to
open Internet Explorer has no effect at all - no error message, just the
'egg-timer' symbol for a few seconds, then nothing happens. Any idea how I
can get both User Accounts to allow internet access immediately?

Hi,

Try.... check that both accounts are trying to open the same Homepage(s). To
be sure set both account Homepages to about:blank.

IE hanging on startup is an indicator that your homepage (or one of them) is
in a security zone that conflicts with the other pages in your startup list
of homepages. viz. the first homepage is in the Trusted Zone, the other
homepages are in either the Internet or Restricted Zone.

For best performance, ensure that you have accepted the Default security
zone settings (by pressing the Default button on each of the Security Zone
tabs). Usually I place my homepages in the Trusted Zone as these pages also
host third-party content or smpt mail access. (eg. myyahoo etc)

Regards.

Thanks rob^_^. I tried all of your suggestions but they didn't work. There
was a difference in the security zone settings but even when I put them all
to default, it still didn't work.

I still don't get why the 1st User I open cannot access the Internet but the
2nd one can, regardless of which one I open first?

Any other suggestions?

I am having the same problem, only one account can start Internet Explorer. I
have one accont with admin privileges that can launch inrternet explorer. The
dealult administrator account with admin rights and two other super user
accounts can not launch Internet Explorer. You click on it and task manager
says internet explorer is running as a process but it never shows up as an
application so it never opens up. I have tried to reload IE8 but still
happens. Anyon have any clues. XP w/sp3 running bit defender
