When I have the add-on "Problem with Add-On Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper"
active new tabs need about 3-4 seconds to load.
Nothing to do with Windows 7. Not an issue with IE7 or IE8 (in which
this add-on causes slowdowns in both versions of IE). This is a problem
with an old and incompatible add-on.

This add-on is no longer used by the latest versions of Java. It is a
remnant that they need to uninstall but have yet to do so. It causes
slowdows in IE7 and IE8 (because both have tabbing features). See Sun's
bug reports about the delay and them not doing a clean uninstall:

http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6792558
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6747116

The result is this remnant file lingers into the install of a new
version of Java. Disable this add-on and the slowdown goes away.
Having it disabled will not interfere with the operation of Java applets
(but make sure you have the latest version of Java).

Hi auntiesgirls,

We need additional information in order to help you.

Which version of Windows? (Including SP level- e.g. Windows 7, Vista SP1,
XP SP2 , 32-bit, 64-bit, etc. Right-click Computer/My Computer> Properties
to obtain this information)

Which version of Internet Explorer? (From IE> Help> About)

If you go to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1
is it reported that you have Java installed? What version?

If it's no longer needed, why does the latest version of jave, when
installed, install 2 SSV Helper? Uninstalled all Java then reinstalled the
latest and there was 2 SSV Helper among the add-ons again.

Because the uninstall of Java (two a's) does NOT remove the add-on. It
was supposed to be uninstalled by a prior version that installed it, but
that uninstall was incomplete. Later versions don't use it so they
don't install it, and because they don't install it means it won't be in
the uninstall logfile for those newer versions. To get rid of it means
uninstalling Java and then removing the remnant files and registry
entries for the add-on (but which I did not record when I went through
the process).

I should note, however, that I did delete the C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
directory when I uinstalled java. Manually deleted the java directories and
did a manual scrub ofhte registry. so I think the latest java did reinstall
this dll.
The file is jp2ssv.ddl. So, I can just delete the jp2ssv.dll from the
C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin directory, delete the reg references to it
(probably ccleaner would find them after the file is deleted) that ought to
clear things up with affecting java, yes?

After I uninstalled Java and then deleted the file and did the registry
cleanup (mostly to get rid of the add-on reference for IE), a subsequent
install of Java (build 1.6.0_14-b08) did not redefine the add-on to IE.
Yes, the jp2ssv.dll file shows up again but it is not registered as an
add-on to IE, so it is not available to IE which means it doesn't gets
loaded which causes the slowdown.

So not only did Sun screw up in not getting rid of the registration for
this add-on but it is continuing to screw up by installing a file that
isn't needed anymore.

Disabling it should be sufficient. Since Sun is continuing to include
this file in later version installs then you deleting it will survive
only until the next time you install a newer version. Disabling this
add-on eliminates the slowdown that it causes in IE.

Later versions don't use [Java Plug-In 2 SSV Helper] so they don't install it ...
On Windows 7 release day I did a clean vanilla install of Windows 7. One of
my printers uses Java for its web interface, so I followed the link to
download Java. I got the Plug-In 2 SSV Helper. See this thread:
