Unable to download any file

I've recently installed Windows 7. I have (again, unfortunately) IE8 (many
problems even in Xp and in Vista, I found 7 to be better).
I have ZoneAlarm firewall and antivirus.
When I first installed the new OS it worked OK, and I was able to download
flash, Windows Live and other useful things. But it's been a couple of days
that I'm unable to download ANY kind of file.Even attachments in e-mail in
hotmail and such. I click on "save" and no "save as" window appears. Not even
the yellow bar on top, saying "You were prevented from downloading this
file". I tried the IE Options and lowered security, lowered privacy, enabled
many things which I usually never enable, said "prompt" for all the rest
etc... with nor result.
What can be the cause?

Registry corruption? Security/obscurity?

IE doesn't have a repair procedure any more so the best you
can do in that regard is try re-registering it using the OS Set Defaults
tool. E.g. starting via the Control Panel. Also, when doing that it
may help to use right-click Run as Administrator. You could even do
that by starting with a safe mode command only boot. E.g. then start
control.exe appwiz.cpl
Set Defaults. Etc.

Good luck

Agreed - This symptom may well relate to the antivirus in use--reinstalling
that might fix it.
