Discussion:
Multiple Problems with IE 8

IE 8 was automatically downloaded to my computer a few days ago, and just
FYI, I've had nothing but problems with it:

1. Sites aren't loading properly and/or are no longer functional -- and the
button that's supposed to remedy that issue has never worked for me on any
site. It was particularly an issue on Yahoo; even when I re-downloaded the
version of IE 8 that's supposedly optimized for Yahoo, I encountered the same
problems.

2. It apparently corrupted one of my McAfee files. Once I downloaded IE 8,
I started getting security warnings from McAfee, and the root of the problem
was that McAfee was suddenly missing certain components. So, I uninstalled
it -- but then I couldn't re-DOWNLOAD it, because of my problems with IE 8.

I'm not sure why Microsoft even bothered to launch this browser. IE 7 was
just fine.

You uninstalled what, IE8 or the McAfee application?

What McAfee application is (was?) installed, is/was your subscription
current, and is it supported in IE8? What other anti-spyware applications
(other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of
these applications running in the background when you installed and/or
uninstalled and/or reinstalled IE8?

Has another McAfee application or a Norton application ever been installed
on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you
bought it)?

Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the original install
of IE8? <=Just ASKING for now

Thanks for responding -- as my problems appear to have worsened.

To clarify:

1. I have Windows XP. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 8400.
2. In my previous post, I meant that I had uninstalled McAfee and was
attempting to re-download it. It's just the standard McAfee anti-virus with
the accompanying security center, which is free with Comcast high-speed
internet. I also have webroot anti-spyware. I've never used any other
anti-virus or anti-spyware software.

I've been monkeying with my computer since my previous post, and have now
encountered additional difficulties:

1. I uninstalled IE 8 and attempted to re-download IE7, since IE7 had
worked so well. Now, IE7 crashes every time I attempt to open it. So, I'm
unable to use internet explorer at all, and I can only access the internet
through Apple Safari, which was automatically downloaded with my iTunes.

2. Yes, there was a restore point before IE8 was downloaded.
Unfortunately, the System Restore function has apparently been corrupted. I
can't find System Restore anywhere on my computer. So, I called Dell, and
the representative walked me through where to look, and it wasn't in any of
those places. The representative thinks that the System Restore function has
been corrupted, but didn't have any suggestons re: how to fix that. I
would've thought that simply restoring the settings from a few days ago would
be the easiest solution, but I'm presently unable to do that. Any thoughts
re: how I can fix the System Restore on my computer?

Thanks a lot for your time....

Comcast's not offered McAfee Security Center freebie since you've own your
computer, has it? Did you have a different, earlier version of McAfee
application installed before you installed the freebie? Did a McAfee (or
Norton) free-trial come preinstalled on the machine when you bought it?

Has the machine EVER been connected to the internet without an active,

to check to see IF there's an available Restore Point created either when
IE8 was first installed or a day or so earlier. If there is, please don't
use it just yet.)

Did the Dell tech discuss the "Last Known Good" option with you (cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852)?

I may be able to get System Restore available again (if it's really "not
there") but doing so would not make any earlier Restore Points available.

I suspect the fact that McAfee Security Center was running in the background
when you installed and uninstalled IE8 may have "screwed the pooch." (And
if you were running IE7 before you installed IE8, uninstalling IE8 would

Hi, Can I join this as I think I have a similar problem and don't know where
to start!
I have too noticed that since downloading IE8 my computer freezes when
trying to call up websites. It's OK for a while then just freezes with the
little green bars at the bottom hanging at about 3 or 4. The only way to
rectify is to restart. I have XP too. PLEASE HELP.. its driving me mad and

do you have java installed on your PC ( start / control panel / java) if so
what version?

From MS release notes
http://www.microsoft.com/nz/windows/internet-explorer/support/faq.aspx

Java 6 update 11 recommended for viewing Java Applets
Older versions of Java may cause crashes and hangs when viewing pages that
load Java Applets. This is caused by architectural changes from IE8 to IE7.
To resolve this, install Java 6 update 11 or higher. See the Help topic

uninstalling IE8 would have automatically restored IE7. Is that not what

Thanks for responding -- as my problems appear to have worsened.
I've been monkeying with my computer since my previous post, and have now
The representative thinks that the System Restore function
has been corrupted, but didn't have any suggestons re: how to fix that.
I
would've thought that simply restoring the settings from a few days ago
would be the easiest solution, but I'm presently unable to do that. Any
thoughts re: how I can fix the System Restore on my computer?
Thanks a lot for your time....

Hi Pa Bear,

I'm having similar problems to Bob's.
I am running:
XP Home Version 2002 Service Pack 3
IE 8 No version listed
Email: Outlook 2000 9.0.0.2711
McAfee Security Center - always kept up to date. This product is provided as
part of the Comast.net package. I have used this product successfully for
years.

I have 2 identical pcs running the same software as above. They are not
networked and access Comcast Broadband through a switch that I have used for
years. There were no problems occurring on either computer prior to IE8
install.

Before IE8 both pcs had the current version, with all updates kept current,
of IE7. I upgraded to IE8 on both of them about 1 week ago. Problems with IE
8 are only happening on one of the pcs. The second pc is working fine....so
far.

Problems with IE 8 were immediately apparent when the menu bar was sometimes
colored black with some menus not showing. Other times it would open fine.
Yesterday problems escalated. To be clear, no additional software or hardware
was put on the pc. No new programs were downloaded. There are no viruses.

The problem now is that McAfee is sending security warnings: "Your security
settings do not allow this file to be downloaded". This happens when trying
to browse using IE 8. It is inconsistent behavior.

The McAfee Security Center will not open. Only the window around the Center
and the interior color of the window is present. The Center is empty. It is
not possible to use any tools or features of the Security Center.

Restore point is corrupted. As you asked "How about Start | (All) Programs |
Accessories | System Tools | System Restore?"
The System Restore window opens but is empty. And stays empty.

Other glitches:
-- In About Internet Explorer, the SYSTEM INFO button is inactive.
-- Outlook: Links in email are not active, although they appear to be hot.
Click on them and IE 8 does not open them.
-- Outlook: Links on email newsletters are not active. Click on them and IE
8 does not open them.
-- Google Advanced Search opens but the text fields are missing.

There are more problems, I'm sure!

From what I am reading on other forums, it may be that IE8 has
incompatabilities with several types of Security software including Norton,
SpyBot and others.

Here's a post from Bleepingcomputer.com that has a fix. Although I'm also
reading that there are problems when trying to uninstall IE8 and revert back
to IE 7.

Quote:
• I would strongly recommend [Temporarily] disabling your anti-virus
application and any anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other
than Defender's) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're
running a third-party firewall, I would recommend [Temporarily] disabling it
and then [Temporarily] enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or
uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

• Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8.

• Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

Thanks again for responding. To answer your questions:

1. I've always had anti-virus software. McAfee was pre-installed on my
computer when I bought it. Then, comcast started offering McAfee for free.
So, when my personal subscription expired, I downloaded the free comcast
version. The only time that my computer has been without McAfee protection
is right now. That's because after I downloaded the new windows updates and
IE8, McAfee no longer worked. Redownloading it has been a high priority, but
I can't log on to comcast's site with IE8 on my computer, because the site
doesn't function with IE8.

2. No, System Restore is no longer available in the Start | Programs |
Accessories | System Tools | System Restore folder. I also searched for it
through Windows Search, and nothing pops up. Previously, when I'd searched
through Windows Search, a shortcut to System Restore had always popped up in
the search.

3. Yes, I'm absolutely certain that McAfee was running in the background,
as I hadn't turned it off. Frankly, I don't think I was even prompted to
turn it off. I just turned on my computer, and a bunch of windows updates
started uploading, and next thing I know I had IE8, problems with my McAfee,
etc.

4. I believe I have XP SP 2, but I'm not absolutely certain about that, and
I'm not sure where to look.

5. No, the Dell tech didn't discuss the "Last Known Good" option, and I
really appreciate the link. I'll give that a shot this morning.

Thanks again for your time.

A1a. Prior to installing the McAfee Security Center freebie, you should have
uninstalled the previous McAfee application and then run the McAfee Consumer
Products Removal tool (cf.
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507). [I very much doubt
you were prompted to do so, unfortunately.]

A1b. I'm not sure any version of McAfee Security Center is supported
(compatible with) IE8. Only McAfee could tell you for sure and I doubt
those running this free app are entitled to direct support from McAfee.

A2. If your subscription expired prior to installing the freebie, you may be
seeing the effects of a hijackware infection.

A3. McAfee VirusScan and Firewall should have been disabled and enabled the
Windows Firewall prior to installing IE8. (Ditto when uninstalling.) [I
very much doubt you were prompted to do so, unfortunately.]

A4. Right-clicking on My Computer & selecting Properties will tell you if
WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3 is installed.

Please note that if SP3 is installed after IE8 (or IE7) is installed, you
will not be able to uninstall IE8 (or IE7) without first uninstalling SP3
(cf. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx).

A5. It's worth a shot, assuming Last Known Good will bring the computer back
to the state it was in prior to installing IE8. (Don't get your hopes up.)

as I hadn't turned it off.

I have Windows XP.
WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

I've never used any other anti-virus
Comcast's not offered McAfee Security Center freebie since you've own your
computer, has it? Did you have a different, earlier version of McAfee
application installed before you installed the freebie? Did a McAfee (or
Norton) free-trial come preinstalled on the machine when you bought it?
Has the machine EVER been connected to the internet without an active,
fully-update anti-virus application installed and a firewall enabled?

Unfortunately, the System Restore function has apparently been corrupted.
I
can't find System Restore anywhere on my computer.
How about Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System
Restore? Not there, either? (Please keep in mind that I'm only asking you
to check to see IF there's an available Restore Point created either when
IE8 was first installed or a day or so earlier.
I suspect the fact that McAfee Security Center was running in the
background when you installed and uninstalled IE8 may have "screwed the
pooch." (And if you were running IE7 before you installed IE8,
uninstalling IE8 would have automatically restored IE7. Is that not what
happened?)

Thanks for responding -- as my problems appear to have worsened.
I've been monkeying with my computer since my previous post, and have now

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.
...the root of the problem
was that McAfee was suddenly missing certain components. So, I uninstalled
it -- but then I couldn't re-DOWNLOAD it, because of my problems with
IE
8.

IE 8 was automatically downloaded to my computer a few days ago, and just
1. Sites aren't loading properly and/or are no longer functional --
and
the
button that's supposed to remedy that issue has never worked for me on any
site. It was particularly an issue on Yahoo; even when I
re-downloaded
the
version of IE 8 that's supposedly optimized for Yahoo, I encountered the
same problems.
2. It apparently corrupted one of my McAfee files. Once I downloaded
IE
8,
I started getting security warnings from McAfee, and the root of the problem
was that McAfee was suddenly missing certain components. So, I uninstalled
it -- but then I couldn't re-DOWNLOAD it, because of my problems with
IE
8.
I'm not sure why Microsoft even bothered to launch this browser. IE 7 was
just fine.
