Discussion:
IE8 final still won't open page in new window/tab

On my machine, IE8 final won't open a link to a page in a new window or new
tab. I mean, with a page that is designed to open in a new window, nothing
happens, period. In a new tab, it just stays on 'connecting ...'

Also, in Windows Explorer, even though I've set 'organize -- folder options'
to open folders in the same window, it's opening them in new windows, unless
I right click on a folder icon and pick 'explore.'

The workaround (unchecking quick tabs) didn't solve this issue.

Worse still, when IE8 crashed whilst checking my web mail, it invited me to
recover the session and then spewed out a never-ending cascade of new
windows. I had to hard reset by pulling the mains plug.

Eisenb11 suggests elsewhere:

" If you're experiencing the same problems that I mentioned do this:
Run [ Command Prompt ] (You will need to **Run as administrator**)
Type the following command: regsvr32 actxprxy.dll "

This worked for me.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

System: Vista Home Premium.
Up-to-date versions of AVG free, Windows Defender and Windows Firewall were
running.
Also have ClamWin, but that only uses a manual scan: no resident shield.
Neither Norton nor McAfee have ever been installed on this machine.

I used Firefox to download the install (and Firefox scanned the install);
then clicked on Open from the Firefox downloaded items window.

Eric,

I found that if Windows Defender and Free AVG were simultaneously running
they would frequently interfere and load my systems way down. My small
portable was nearly useless until I removed Windows Defender. I removed it
because it seems to have the largest footprint and require more resource than
AVG Free.

The latest version of AVG Free has an actively monitoring spyware module, so
I found Windows Defender unnecessary. If WD also had antivirus protection I
might have kept it instead.

As for the inability to open links, I've seen that happen even after
verifying that the Internet Access is OK by using ping or other programs.
This can happen because IE apparently uses Winsock2 access, and that can be
corrupted without affecting many other network programs.

Microsoft has an article on this at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

There's a nice open-source tool that looks for problems, displays your
Winsock 2 configuration and lets you fix them. It's at:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

On the other hand, Google searches show that there are still lots of
problems showing up for people using IE8. I don't think it's stable even
though Microsoft apparently disagrees. And my system still has episodes of
inability to connect, application errors on closing, and tabbing errors. So
my suggestions may or may not help.

Good luck,

Thanks a lot, Mwewe. I certainly have had issues but simply assumed it was
AVG. Until I turned off scan removable devices on insertion, sometimes when
I inserted a flash stick -- or switched directories when copying files -- it
would hang or crash Windows Explorer. And with system icons disappearing,
that in turn involved going into task manager and terminating processes and
manually restarting programs, or a reboot.

Will check out the links.

I think that both Vista and IE8 were released too early. As a veteran
techie, I wonder if things aren't becoming too clever, too complex and
unmanageable (not only for users but for developers)?

I initially had the very same problem with IE8 not opening links in a new
window or new tab. I did some research online and found a very simple
solution. In the Start Menu, right-click on Internet Explorer and choose
"Run as administrator". You should only have to do this the one time. This
solved the problem for me. Good luck!

At last I have discovered where the crime has been committed. This fixes the problem. Its a corrupt user account.

Secondary problem, view your devices in control panel ? nothing showing

Recreate a new user, permission level as required and login bingo, not only does the IE8 now open new windows etc but the devices have come back. Think its time to remove the UAC again.

IE8 will not open new window found cause at last after 4 days
At last I have discovered where the crime has been committed. This fixes the problem. Its a corrupt user account.

Secondary problem, view your devices in control panel ? nothing showing

Recreate a new user, permission level as required and login bingo, not only does the IE8 now open new windows etc but the devices have come back. Think its time to remove the UAC again.
