Discussion:
IE 8 and AIM Chat (bizarre repetition behavior)

I just upgraded to IE 8. When trying out AIM Chat, it exhibits bizarre
behavior--all the chat in the chat room keeps repeating, as well as YouTube
videos which are posted to the chat room. There is a delay of a few seconds,
then the chat and videos repeat again! This happens over and over, as if
stuck in a loop--and the chat continues pasting itself right back into the
room. Anyone else witness this behavior? I used the default settings for IE
8 when I installed it. Java and Flash Player are both current versions--I
suspect a Java error; but maybe it's IE 8's fault? Thanks.

Hi,

Does this happen in other chat programs by other vendors?

AIM/AOL has its own way of doing things. If you are also running the AOL
browser (a MSIE browser), you may also have to update it when you updated to
IE8 as it shares some settings with the current IE version.

Regards.

I don't know, I don't use any other chat but AOL. After updating IE8, I
updated AOL 9.1 to version 9.5, which comes with "tabbed browsing" (I assume
the AOL equivalent of IE8). Neither one (IE8 or AOL's IE8) works with AIM
Chat--they both behave the same--repeating chat and videos over and over and
over. The only way to get it to stop seems to be by closing the browser.

To make matters worse, there seems to be no way of contacting AIM, which
apparently is "seperate" from AOL now. Terribly frustrating... I'm just
going to continue using the AOL client for chatting...I hate AIM Chat anyway.
But, thanks for the advice.

It may help to elaborate on the "chat...keeps repeating"
symptom. E.g. other posters have complained about
a continuous scrolling problem, presumably in a more
general context but that sounds more like a problem
with their mouse to me.

Robert, sorry for late response. What I meant was, after opening the chat
room window and waiting a minute or so, the chat window "re-loaded" itself.
It wasn't a scrolling issue, the chat just "re-loaded." I don't know a
better way to describe what it did. When it did this "re-loading," all the
chat showed up in duplicate--meaning, you'd see X lines of chat, followed by
the identical X lines of chat. That sequence kept repeating until you exited
the chat room, which seemed to be the only way to "escape" from it.

NOTE: It's pretty much a moot point now--AIM has apparently corrected the
problem. The chat window now functions correctly now (no more "re-loading").
Thanks~
