cannot delete history in IE 8 running on xp pro

The Delete History pop-up box says it's deleting the files but then
it just hangs & to stop it must use ctl alt del

Have tried several times & rebooted & tried executing the deletes via run
rather than the dialog box to no avail

Hi,
1. Can you clear the history from Control Panel> Internet Options with no IE
windows/processes open?

2. Preventatative... Set days to keep history to no more than 20-30 days.

3. With XP, you should be able to delete the History folder and allow
Windows to recreate it on startup, but this free program is easier: It
deletes the History\index.dat file.
