Everytime I open a new tab in IE8 whether it be using ctrl+t or the new tab
button, when I type a web address into the address bar and hit return or
press go IE opens a new tab with my chosen website in but leaves the tab I
opened empty, if I then type a website address in the newly opened tab with
my chosen website in I don't have this problem, if I then switch back to the
blank tab I opened and type another address in it again opens up a new tab
with my chosen website in. I find this highly annoying and cannot find any
solution to it. It would be a good idea to fix this, if anyone experiences
this or has fixed it please let me know by replying here.

Aron,

I can't duplicate your problem here. Opening a new tab works that same way
it did in IE 7. I don't think your problem qualifies as a bug and not a
feature suggestion. I have a number of bugs myself. Beta testing for fun and
profit, right?

Sincerely,
Myles J. Swift

Make sure that you aren't inadvertently leaving an Alt- key in effect.

Your symptom description is easily duplicated by
pressing and holding an Alt- key when you
"hit return or press go"

I managed to stop it from happening by running IE in No Addons mode which
leads me to believe it is a conflicting addon. So I disabled all of the
addons and re ran IE8 in the normal mode and the problem reoccured again, I
believe it may be the RoboForm plugin that I use. Another thing I notice is
that most websites render incorrectly especially sites like BBC and iGoogle
(I think its the javascript but I havn't been able to debug any error
messages yet as there are none), also some of the Fav Icons seem to not be
assigned to the correct favourite entry.

List of addons that I have installed:
Abobe PDF link helper
Create mobile favourite
Encarta search bar
FGCatchUrl - Flash get
Fill forms - Roboform
FlashGet
FlashGet
FlashGet GetFlash Class
Groove GFS Browser Helper
Research
RoboForm
RoboForm Toolbar
RoboForm ver. 6-5-9 by Siber-Systems Inc
Save Forms
Send to OneNote
Shockwave Flash Object
SSVHelper class
Sun Java Console
Windows Live Sign-in helper
Windows Live Toolbar
Windows Live Toolbar Helper

I'm having similar problems with IE.

The addons that we share are:

Adobe PDF Link Helper
Groove GFS Browser Helper
Research
Send to OneNote
Shockwave Flas Object
SSVHelperClass
Sun Java Console
Windows Live Sign-in Helper
Windows Live Toolbar
Windows Live Toolbar Helper

That should help narrow the list of possible conflicting addons

You can narrow the addon list even more. I was told to use Process Monitor
to look at the IE process and watch it crashing/troubling. The last addon
loaded before that is most likely the evil one.

I wanted to raise a similar issue, and perhaps the two are really the same.
My issue is that visible tab switching is not synchronized with URL and
content pane switching. This is much more evident on slower PC's and so
users with fast PC's may not notice it.

Here's the scenario:
1. User triggers a tab switch by opening a new tab (or switching between
open tabs)
2. The following events occur, all at (slightly) different times
A. The content area (i.e. the web page itself) is updated to the newly
selected tab.
B. The new tab display changes to "selected" and the old tab to
"unselected.
C. The URL bar changes to the text of the newly selected tab.

Between events A and B, there is a disagreement between the active tab and
the content displayed. For instance, a user may see www.microsoft.com in his
URL bar, but the web page he/she is viewing is actually from www.hulu.com.
Before event C, there is sometimes enough time for the user to type in a new
URL, which will actually trigger a navigation event upon the incorrect tab.
This seems similar to the event that is being reported here. A user could
open a new tab, receive the "about:tabs" page, and then begin typing in the
desired URL. Best case scenario, this will cause frustration, due to the
fact that the user's typing is interrupted by the delayed URL update. Worst
case scenario is that the user will actually press enter before the URL bar
is updated, and this will cause a navigation event on the wrong page. Note
that these three events do not always seem to occur in the order given above,
but it is clear that they do not always occur simultaneously, and to me that
is a significant problem.

FYI, this is not unique to IE8, I have experienced it also on IE7. The
problem could be solved by ensuring that tab, URL, and contect switches
happen instantaneously and that related to page updates, memory allocations,
and process creation/deletions are performed asynchronously. If the new tab
is not ready to be drawn, the tab and URL change needs to be instantaneous,
and the page itself needs to be given some kind of "loading" placeholder so
that the user is not confused about which page they currently viewing. To
reproduce this error, I would recommend going to a site like hulu and control
clicking several different videos to open them up in separate tabs. I can
reproduce this behavious on demand if I open about six videos. Anyone with a
very fast PC may have to open many more than six. Also, it seems that the
problem is best replicated in a new browser instance.

A similar delay can be noted when closing tabs. The cost involved in
terminating and cleaning up resources can significantly delay the visual
feedback of the UI and tabs. Why not instantaneously hide the tab and clear
the content area, then deallocate resources asynchronously?

has anyone suggested checking the status of the Internet Options?
Open your IE8 and follow these actions:
Menubar Tools >> Internet Options >> General tab >> Tabs sections >>
Settings button
Got that so far? you should have a new dialogue window open that has several
sub-settings for the Tabs of IE8
In the 'Open links from other programs in', you will a choice of a different
setting depending upon your preference:
- 'A new window', allowing embedded IE page programs to open a new set of
windows and not closing the source window. This is also handy if you are
working inside a site that will make several references to additional
materials.
OR
- 'A new tab in the current window', remembering that a new instance of
Internet Explorer is a new launch of the program

If 'Enable Tabbed Browsing' is enabled, the selection 'A new tab in the
current window' might also help resolve your issue

Good luck
