Same problem for us on the RTM (final) of IE8 (Build 8.0.6001.18702) on XP SP3.

The Web Client service is not associated with this problem - right?

Have any of you thought of posting to a Sharepoint NG?
Presumably people there would have a better idea of whatever
it is that you are talking about. Cross-posting to one for convenience.

A solution is there from a discussion about a perhaps related symptom...

(Alt-7 search in web interface archive of Sharepoint General for
IE8
)

Firefox with IE Addon, solves the problem.

FWIW it sounds like a problem with User-Agent.
Setting Compatibility mode for all sites might be a way
of handling that.

Good luck

I found this week that IE 8 and Explorer View with SharePoint 2007Sp2 worked
fine on servers running Server 2003 x86/x64 but when you install SharePoint
2007Sp2 on Server 2008 R2 Explorer view fails on Root sites but not Sub Sites
and work fine on the Central Administration & the Shared Services site.
Explorer view stopped working on Server 2003Sp2 and above so this is not an
issue. XPSp3 and Windows 7 X64 and x86 do not work well with IE 8. Note on
Server 2008 R2 you need to add the DisableLoopbackCheck to Lsa or you cannot
view sites other then the Central Administration and CANNOT view Shared
Services site at all. IE 6 works fine with Explorer view I no longer have a
pc with IE 7. You are prompted to logon 2 or 3 times and if you click cancel
Explorer view will come up (XP & Win 7).
Sites under IIS 7.5 run Session State as SQL Server BUT the Central
Administration & the Shared Services sites run Session State as In Process
(Explorer View Works)
