When you run Clean Up Now in Options and Maintenance and select either remove
or delete ALL Messages does it delete messages that are saved the inbox? All
I want to do is to delete/cleanup any old deleted msgs that appear to be
stored in the deleted and sent dbx folders but want to keep the messages that
are in my inbox.

All of my msgs are auto deleted from the deleted folder upon exit and are
not saved in the sent folder but the corresponding dbx folders still seem to
be very large.

[Crosspost to OE General]

We shall assume you're running WinXP SP3.

The Clean Up Now button removes any downloaded newsgroup (only) messages but
it does not delete the message headers. If you don't access any newsgroups
in OE, pressing the button doesn't "clean up" anything.

Long story short: You need to compact the folder after deleted its messages.
See below.

General OE User Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:
